2011 WINNERS CELEBRATE AT PHOENIX AWARDS CEREMONY

PHILADELPHIA, PA. – April 6, 2011 – Real estate developers, environmentalists and other public and private sector professionals honored 11 revitalization projects at The Phoenix Awards Ceremony during Brownfields 2011 in Philadelphia, PA held April 3-5, 2011. Michael Krancer, PA Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection and Tom Murphy, Senior Fellow, Urban Land Institute co-hosted the event to celebrate the winners for their accomplishments on projects that spanned the country.

The award winners remediated and redeveloped over 2,787 acres of land while creating or retaining over 8,427 jobs. These sites are now used for major transportation facilities, affordable, senior and veteran and urban housing, and mixed-use complexes with significant community, entertainment and cultural assets that are destinations for both residents and tourists.

Created in 1997, this prestigious award honors individuals and groups working to solve critical environmental or social challenges, transforming blighted and contaminated areas into productive new uses and sustainable development projects. The Phoenix Awards are widely recognized as the outstanding award for achievement of excellence in Brownfield redevelopment, and often are called “the Brownfields equivalent of Hollywood’s Oscar.” The Phoenix Award winners represent outstanding brownfield or environmental projects from each of the 10 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regions and a project selected for special honors.

The Grand Prize was awarded to the Troutdale Reynolds Industrial Park Redevelopment Project, Troutdale, Oregon. Piquette Square for Veterans, Detroit, Michigan was the 1st runner-up winner. The People’s Choice Award was presented to the Former Magic Marker/Gould Battery Site, Trenton, New Jersey which received the most votes from the thousands of conference attendees.

Region 8: Weber County to Salt Lake City Commuter Rail, Ogden City, UT
Region 9: Marina Gateway Hotel & Commercial Project, National City, CA
Region 10: Troutdale Reynolds Industrial Park Redevelopment Project, Troutdale, OR
Community Impact Winner: Piquette Square for Veterans, Detroit, MI

The awards are open to any individual, group, company, organization, government body or agency. Criteria for The Phoenix Awards focus on the magnitude of the project, innovative techniques, solutions to regulatory issues, and impact upon the community. A panel of environmental professionals and business and government leaders select the winners.

The Phoenix Awards Institute, Inc., an environmental and service nonprofit organization, is dedicated to honoring the groups that remediate and redevelop brownfield sites. We recognize the men and women who use innovative solutions with revitalization projects that transform blighted sites into new significant community assets. The Phoenix Awards showcase these winning techniques and publicize these premier redevelopment projects as models for other communities around the world.

These awards were established in 1997 and are awarded annually. In 2000, the award program became part of the National Brownfields Conference sponsored by U.S. EPA, ICMA and many other partners and sponsors. A call for nominations begins January 1st and closes June 30th each year. Winners are selected on an annual basis.

2010 Phoenix Awards ANNOUNCED

Harrisburg, PA (February 14, 2010) – The Phoenix Award Executive Committee is proud to announce The Phoenix Award winners for 2010 for excellence in brownfield redevelopment. The project participants will be honored at an awards ceremony during Brownfields 2011 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, April 3-5, 2011. During the environmental conference with an expected crowd of at least 6,000 participants, these Phoenix Award winners will showcase their projects with case study presentations and will be highlighted during the awards ceremony.

The Phoenix Awards Grand Prize, 1st Runner-up Prize, the Regional Awards and the Community Impact Prize, and the People’s Choice Award will be presented during a special plenary ceremony. The People’s Choice Award is presented to the project that receives the most votes from conference attendees, based upon the case study presentations and exhibit information.

The Phoenix Award winners represent outstanding revitalization projects from each of the 10 US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regions as well as projects having a special community impact. The winning projects were selected by a panel of environmental professionals and business and government leaders based on a set of five criteria: magnitude of the project, innovative techniques, solutions to regulatory/social issues, and impact upon the community.
